LEGO MINDSTORM: How can I implement this technology into my class? By Kira Dolley
The generation "native" (as many people call our youth) are the generation that has grown up to know new technology as a everyday tool. With that being said, how can teachers keep up with the natives and make them see that "old school"/Legos can be a technology that we can all use. The solution was simple to the creators of Legos, they have made technology catch up to "old school" ways--with the invention of Lego Mindstorm!
Lego creators have this to say about their Lego Education Academy {Click their release to go to their page}
"Since our establishment in 1980, LEGO®Education has been committed to providing complete learning solutions in a variety of curriculum areas including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We continue to be dedicated to the development of activities that provide students with the tools they need to excel in the world of tomorrow. Our goal is to enable educators to use our resources and advance their teaching to the next level.
The Academy offers professional development programs for teachers who want to get the most out of their LEGO Education resources. Experience a motivating approach to teaching. Learn to facilitate rather than direct classroom learning and find out how to encourage your students to take a more active role in their learning." ~Lego Education Academy
Although with that being said, Lego Mindstorm implementation is not cheap! Many schools use grants or outsourced funding through PTA's or community organizations/businesses. The going price for teachers that would teach the Mindstorm applications to the students is $1,500. Not only is there a cost for teachers to be educated with this technology, the LEGO technology cost as well. Each set can cost upwardly from $100 and above. Most struggling schools can not afford the upfront cost and look to outside sources for funding.

Lego Mindstorm is a technological tool that motivates students through hands on instruction and implementation--it is a must have for any working classroom K-8!
